Introduction
This article outlines best practice for suppressing contacts across one, multiple or all email types.
(There is a previous, superseded, method for achieving this which uses a deprecated configuration setting for global suppressions and relies on the client ensuring that the email address status field is set to Unsubscribe.)
This method ignores the status field. It is driven by list subscription and is powered by Email Types.

What are Email Types?
Email Types categorize the mailings you send, informing Vuture what kind of mailing you are sending. Most mailings are categorized by one of a set of typical types (e.g. Newsletters, Invitations, Alerts, etc.).
In order to allow users to opt out of mailing types, we advise you to set up suppression lists which correspond with the mailing type. Typically this will be in the format *Send no event invitations or *Send no alerts.
Within a preference form, the contact can then choose, from a check box list, which type of mailing they no longer wish to receive. This will automatically add the recipient to the appropriate list. These lists can be used as suppression lists when creating a new Email Type, through the Campaign Types functionality.
Campaign Types have inbuilt instructions to suppress certain lists which you specify. When, at the point of Send, you select the Email Type from the drop-down list of types, Vuture will suppress your mailing on the specified list and send the email to everyone else. Note: In addition, the global suppression list needs to be added to all campaign types (only Global Vx lists can be suppressed so make all suppression lists Global).
What is the Difference between Email Types and Campaign Types?
The differences between them are mostly just terminology. Email Types are typically set up for you by your Project Manager, when you first use Vuture Vx, following your firm’s decision on how many different and separate Email types you are likely to send. The list is typically only 4 or maximum 5, such as Emails, Alerts, Invites and Newsletters or maybe Publications.
Campaign Types were developed more recently to allow firms to set up their own Email Types and specify their own choice of suppression lists, on a template mailing type. However, Campaign Type templates are not always necessarily for Emails. For crm-integrated clients, Campaign Types can also be set up for other, non-email activities such as Links Clicked. This does not apply to Vx users.
Prerequisites
To access the Campaign Type and Activity Templates screen for Vx lists, please ask your Customer Success Manager to enable the following for all roles in your Vx instance:
- Admin.Roles.CampaignType & ActivityTemplates
- Admin.Roles.EmailTypesForStandalone
- Admin.Roles.Admin.Display Campaign Types in the Email Types dropdown on the Send Screen
How to Set Up Campaign Types
To create a new, bespoke, Email Type:
Step 1. From "Admin.CampaignTypes" select your CRM source, which is Vx:

Step 2. To create a new Email Type template, click on “+ New”
(or choose to edit an existing Email type. Warning, best practice is to leave your original set of Email Types in this list, as your PM set them up for you.)

Email Types
Select a category for your template, e.g. Invitation, Publication, E-Card etc.

This category will cause your new Email Type to copy and use any defaults that you do not define. Select a similar category to the new Email Type you are creating.
New Campaign Type: enter the name for your new Email Type template (e.g. UK Newsletters, or in this example, Clients Only, no press or competitors) and click Create Template.

Step 3. Within your new Campaign templates you can edit and specify:

The Name of your new Email Type. If you wish to change it here.
The Benchmarking Category. This defines the type of email sent for the purposes of the Benchmarking Reports Dashboard.
Container access. This defines from which containers this template will be accessible when sending an email. Using this option you could “lock down” an Email Type to be used in just one or more containers.
Access level. This defines which Roles will be able to select this specific email type template when sending an email.
Step 4. Select suppression lists: When this Email type template is selected for an email send, any contacts that are in the lists which have been chosen as suppressed, using this field, won’t receive the mailing. In the example illustrated, a suppression list titled Competitors could be selected, and a suppression list titled Press Contacts could also be selected. (These are just some possible examples. They have not been pictured in the image above.) In addition, the global suppression list needs to be added for all campaign types.
Please note: Only Global lists can be suppressed. Global lists are those which can be seen from any container.
When you are finished with your template click “Save” and it will be ready to use. If you click “Reset” this won’t delete any saved changes, but it will take you back to Step 1.
Deleting an Email Type (or Campaign Type) Template
You may delete a Campaign Template only if it has not been used in an email send. If it has been used, you will only be allowed to disable it. One way to disable it could be to make it available only to an unused container, or you could limit the access to Vuture Admin only, for a client. Client users will not then see the Email Type in their drop down list.
Sending an Email
Navigate via Home to a test campaign.
Choosing to Send an Email will now display the new Email Type in the drop down list; as long as you are in a permitted container and have a Role which is allowed to see the new Email Type.
Selecting the new Email Type would (for this example) automatically suppress anyone on the Press Contacts list or the Competitors list, along with the global Suppression List.
