DNS

Domain Name System (DNS), It is a directory or address book of all the different machines that are connected to the internet. It is an essential component of the functionality on the Internet. 

Reverse DNS (rDNS)

Whenever you visit a webpage your browser checks for the IP address of that domain name and uses that address to find the correct page. E.g. if you visit Amazon.co.uk you ask DNS where they are located and it will bring up their website. Imagine it like an address book. You want to find your friend Sarah Brown's address so you look it up in an address book and you get her address. 

Reverse DNS is the opposite of this. It's the equivalent of being given an address and you have you find out who lives in the address. it's the act of looking up the host by their IP address. 

rDNS  is one of the ways email servers use to verify that the sending server is not a malicious spammer. If the sending email server doesn’t have a reverse DNS record at all, that’s usually a sign of spam and the email sent from such server is rejected by most email servers.
