Gmail/Yahoo List Header Unsubscribe Requirement
All senders of email are required to use the POST version of the List Header Unsubscribe. This is a silent unsubscribe that is transmitted back to the ESP. Vuture is implementing the required POST version and there is no action needed by the client. There is no ability to remove this or alter the implementation of it to do anything other than allow the ESP to receive the unsubscribe and take action.
Please see a few notes on the List Header Unsubscribe
- Lack of this required feature will eventually result in Gmail and Yahoo blocking and bouncing all mail.
- The List Header Unsubscribe is included within the header of all email messages sent by Vuture.
- Gmail chooses whether they want to display the Unsubscribe in their UI for the end user to see at the top of the message (it is usually displayed for all marketing messages.) However, it is possible to see a marketing message without it, which does not mean it's not enabled correctly.
- Clients will be able to view their contacts who have unsubscribed using the Spam or Feedback Loop Dashboard. This dashboard will display the emails of contacts who have either clicked Report as Spam, or who have clicked the one-click List Header Unsubscribe as displayed at the top of the email message.
Make it easy to unsubscribe
Always give your recipients an easy way to unsubscribe from your messages. Letting people opt out of your messages can improve open rates, click-through rates, and sending efficiency. One-click unsubscribe makes it easy for people to opt out.
FAQs
This FAQ was created following the requirement from Gmail and Yahoo that every email must have a one click Unsubscribe link in the header.
Q. My CSM told me that the one-click link has been added to the header of my emails, but I sent a test email to myself and there is no Unsubscribe in the header. Why not?
A. Once the one-click Unsubscribe link has been added to your instance, it will be present in all emails sent from your platform. However, it may not always be visible in the browser. This will be for a variety of reasons, not all of which have been shared with us by Gmail. However, if the email is obviously (apparent to Gmail) not marketing, or it has an extremely low Spam score for example, Gmail may choose not to make the link visible.
You can verify for yourself that the one-click link is present by examining the header in "Show original" and search for "one-click" or you can ask Support or your CSM to confirm for you. To be compliant, the link must be present. Gmail may decide not to display it.
Q. What will happen when a contact clicks unsubscribe?
A. When a contact clicks the link, they will be immediately suppressed from all mailings. There will be no Are You Sure? or other management. Gmail has specified it must be a one click action.
The contact's email address will be written into a separate table in the Vuture database. This table is checked before all future mailings and the contact will be suppressed. The unsubscribe will be global, i.e., it will impact all marketing emails from a client’s instance.
Q. Can contacts reverse their decision to unsubscribe?
A. Contacts cannot overwrite the unsubscribe using the Preference Manager or by subscribing in some other way. The only possible way to resubscribe will be to talk to the firm, who will then have to contact Vuture and raise a support ticket. There is a Vuture Only article on how the unsubscribe removal will happen, and it could take two or more days.
Q. What if a contact unsubscribes, but the email address is then updated in the CRM? For the header unsubscribe is it based on email address or the contact ID?
A. It is based on the email address. If a contact unsubscribes, that email address is unsubscribed permanently in the Vuture database, no matter what the email address is then changed to in the CRM.
Q. Where can I see all the unsubscribed email addresses?
A. Contacts who have unsubscribed in this way will show in the Email Confirmation email as a Suppressed ISP complaint, with a download link to view all the email addresses.
Also, Vuture admin users who wish to see which of their contacts have unsubscribed in this way can use the Spam Complaints Dashboard to view the suppressed email addresses. The Dashboard is described in the Knowledge Base here.
There is currently no differentiation in the Dashboard between Unsubscribe requests and Spam complaints.
Q. Can I see my sender score anywhere?
A. You can set up Google Postmaster Tools.
Q. Can bots click on the unsubscribe link in the header?
A. No. The way the header link has been designed, there is no way a bot can interact with it. The list-unsubscribe header only takes a POST method - Bots will only do a GET.
Q. If we use alternative email and the contact clicked the one click unsubscribe, would this also mean that the recipient's corporate or primary email would also be unsubscribed?
A. No. Only the email address to which the mail was sent will be unsubscribed.
